Road Trip Estonia along the north coast

09th of August 2024

 

Once again we started the day with a bath in the Baltic Sea. Afterwards we drove to the promenade of Haapsalu, where we found a wonderful playground (Mängu- ja treeningpark). While the children played on the playground, we were able to walk along the promenade and admire the wonderful scenery, starting from the Tšaikovski Bench (Tšaikovski Rosa) and ending with a beautiful park with wonderful buildings.

Then we visited the railway museum (Raudtee- ja Sidemuuseum) containing the longest wood station. Next we visited the Ilon Wikland Museum the illustrator of a lot of Astrid Lindgren books (Iloni Imedemaa) Ilon's Wonderland. The english name of this Museum is "Ilon's Wonderland" and really this Museum is a wonderland. 

In the afternoon we drove to the north coast of Estonia by Riguldi/ Rickul. At the beach of Peraküla we found a great overnight spot. Before bed we enjoyed the time at the beach.

10th of August 2024

 

In the morning the weather was windy and cloudy, but we still took the time to build a sandcastle on Peraküla beach. At noon we drove to Padise, where we visited the Padise Monastery. However, during our visit there was a power outage in the monastery, but we were still able to visit the monastery for half price. Due to the power outage, the rooms of the monastery seemed very mystical and the bats were more active than usual.

In the afternoon we drove to Rummu where we visited rummu karjäär ja murru vangla a submerged limestone quarry. Here we enjoyed the trail across the limestone hill and had a bath in the lake.

Afterwards we drove back to the coast by Meremõisa where we visited the Keila juga waterfall. Here we had the opportunity to visit a local music festival.

In the evening we found our overnight spot at the beach of Vääna (Vääna rand).

Road Trip Estonia along the north coast to Tallinn

In the morning we had an extensive walk at the beach of Vääna and had fun with the deep subsidence sand. At lunchtime we drove to Rocca al Mare, where we visited the open-air museum of Estonia (Eesti Vabaõhumuuseum). We were very impressed by this museum and had a lot of fun walking through the history of Estonia.

Afterwards we drove to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. Here we had an amazing walk through the historical centre of Tallinn. By the way we started to search catches by using the app called Geocaching.

Road Trip Estonia along the north coast to East

12th of August 2024

 

A rainy day and therefore ideal for a long distance trip from Tallinn to the easternmost point of Estonia, the city of Narva. We choosed the direct way to Narva, the motorway number one. Before we started the long distance trip we had a break in Maardu where we washed our clothes. Then we followed the highway to Narva and passed many towns without being able to take any pictures because of the heavy rain. Only some snapshots were possible from the districts of Haljala, Rannu, Kõrkküla, Järve and Sillamäe.

In Narva we found an amazing overnight spot at the bottom of Castle of Narva. For the way back to Tallinn we will take more time to enjoy the north-east coast of Estonia.

Road Trip Estonia along the north coast to the west

13th of August 2024

 

In Narva we took a detailed sightseeing walk around the historic Narva Castle. Also we enjoyed the view to the wonderful Russian town of Ivangorod. At the border between Estonia and Russia there was a busy intersection of peoples but for us was Russia unreachable.

In the afternoon we drove to the North, to Narva-Jõesuu. Here we try to get access to the beach. At the end of Narva-Jõesuu we found the access to the Narva-Jõesuu beach. After a swim in the Baltic Sea, we headed west and passed the towns of Sillamäe and Toila. In Toila we took a dinner break in the beautiful Toila Oru Park. Afterwards we drove through the towns of Martsa and Saka. At the Aa beach we found an amazing overnight spot the beach. Before bed time we had enjoyed the sunset and Lotta has fun the hopping from findling (errant block) to findling.

Road Trip Estonia along the north coast to the west

14th of August 2024

 

Once again we started the day with a bath in the Baltic Sea and Lotta discovered a new hobby called findling (errant block) hopping. After our wonderful morning at Aa Beach, we continued west along the coast. In Aseri we had our first stop in order to fulfill our fridge. We made our next stop in Kalvi and walked around the beautiful Kalvi mõis castle. The entry was forbidden because this wonderful building is in private ownership. Afterwards we passed the towns of Rutja and Eisma. In Vainupea we had third stop and here we found an amazing spot for our lunch break. This spot have everything and we were breathless about the beautiful scenery.

Next we visited the fishing village Altja where we had once again a wonderful walk. In Altja we started our trip through the national parc of Lahemaa (Lahemaa Rahvuspark). In Võsu we had our overnight stop at the public campsite "RMK Võsu telkimisala".

Road Trip Estonia to the most northern Point of Estonia

15th of August 2024

 

In the morning we made a side trip to the manor of Palmse (Palmse Mõis). Here we enjoyed the wonderful scenery, the highlight was the greenhouse and the beautiful garden. Next we drove back to Võsu where we enjoyed the sun at the beach (Võsu rand). After a swim in the Baltic Sea, we had lunch in a restaurant in the picturesque old town of Võsu. 

In the afternoon we visited again a picturesque old town, Käsmu. In Käsmu Lotta had fun again by findling (errant block) hopping. Then we drove to Viinistu, where we made a short stop at the old harbor. Afterwards we drove to Purekkari rändrahn where we had an amazing walk to the most northern Point of Estonia called "Purekkari neem". In Loksa, our next stop, we replenished our food supplies.

In the evening we chose a campsite near Kahala called “Hiie talu puhkeküla” in front of Lake Kahala (Kahala Järv). This campsite is designed by an Artist.

Road Trip Estonia back to Tallin

16th of August 2024

 

In the morning we cleaned ourselves and the interior of our truck and enjoyed the artistic landscape of this campsite called “Hiie talu puhkeküla”. In Kiiu, our first stop, we visited the manor of Kiiu (Kiiu mõis) and the tower of Kiiu (Kiiu torn). Next we visited the waterfall of Jägala (Jägala juga). In Maardu we stopped again, as some days before, in order to wash our clothes.

In the evening we visited again Tallinn and found a lot of other wonderful spots in compare to our first visit. And again we overnighted at the harbour of Tallinn but at an other place as before.

Boad Trip Tallinn to Helsinki

17th of August 2024

 

Very early we took the ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki. In the morning we reached Helsinki. After some confusion within the city of Helsinki, we found a beautiful place to stay overnight on Hietaranta beach, the city beach of Helsinki. In the afternoon we rented e-scooters to explore the center of Helsinki.

We started our visit of Helsinki in the historic center and walked to the harbor. Here we had our not so good lunch. Then we found several geocatches and ended up in the Helsinki City Museum (Helsingin kaupunginmuseo), where one geocatche is hidden. This museum is highly recommended for families, we were very impressed.

Next we were part of a demonstration at the Helsinki Cathedral (Helsingin tuomiokirkko). At the end we walked through the City centre of Helsinki and took nearby the station (Helsingin päärautatieasema) again E-Scooters in order to drove back to our overnight spot. Before going to bed we enjoyed the sunset on the beach.

Geocaching in Helsinki

18th of August 2024

 

Today we let hidden geocaches guide us through the historic old town of Helsinki. Before that, we had already taken a swim in the Baltic Sea at Hietaranta Beach. Afterwards we took E-Scooter to visit the Temppeliaukio Church (Temppeliaukion Kirkko), a church built in a rock in the middel of Helsinki. We were very impressed. Here we started our geocaching through Helsinki. The first geocache took us to the Art Gallery (Helsingin taidehalli) and then to the Helsinki Natural History Museum (Luonnontieteellinen Museo). The next Geocache was hidden at the art Museum of Helsinki (HAM Helsingin taidemuseo). Afterwards we found Geocaches at the Hietalahti Market (Hietalahdentori) and in the Sinebrychoff Park (Sinebrychoffin puisto). Then the Geocache guided us to the National Memorial to the Winter War (Talvisodan kansallinen muistomerkki). Finally, we went to the port of Helsinki once again.

For the way back to our overnight spot we rented again E-Scooter. In the evening we enjoyed the sunset at the Hietaranta beach.
